Our PROGRAMS
Three programs. One goal — a kid who walks into class with confidence.
Whether your child needs to catch up, keep up, or move ahead, START Jr. has a program built for exactly where they are right now. Every session is led by a certified educator, personalized to your child, and designed to build more than just grades — it builds the kind of understanding that lasts.
Math
Count on us.
Math anxiety is real, and it usually starts with a single gap — one concept that didn't click, piling into the next, and the next, until a subject that should feel logical starts to feel impossible. At START Jr., we don't just work on tomorrow's test. We find the gap, close it, and make sure everything built on top of it is actually solid.

How Our Mathematics Sessions Work
Every new student starts with a diagnostic assessment — not a test, just a conversation with a bit of problem-solving — so we know exactly where your child is strong and where there are gaps. From there, we build a custom learning plan and work through it session by session.
We don't just show students how to solve problems. We teach them why the process works, so they can tackle problems they've never seen before.
Session length
60 or 90 minutes
Format
1-on-1 (in-person or online)
Frequency
1–3 sessions per week, recommended
Who This Is For
A student who says "I'm just not a math person" (that's a confidence problem, not an ability problem — and we fix it)
A student who does fine until the curriculum speeds up, then falls behind
A student who understands the concept but freezes on tests
A high performer who wants to get ahead, prep for AP, or challenge placement
What Parents See
“My daughter went from crying at the kitchen table every night to finishing her math homework on her own — in about six weeks.”
— Parent of a Grade 7 student
“My son got a 94% on his Algebra final after failing the midterm. I honestly didn't think that was possible.”
— Parent of a Grade 10 student
Did you know? Students who fall behind in math in Grade 6 are 4x more likely to struggle through all of high school math. Early intervention changes everything.
Science
Question everything.
Science is one of the most exciting subjects in school — and one of the most frustrating when you're behind. The problem is usually not that a student isn't capable. It's that science builds on itself: miss the foundations of cells and you'll struggle with genetics. Miss the basics of forces and physics becomes a wall. Our educators go back to where things stopped making sense, rebuild from there, and make the subject come alive.

How Our Science Sessions Work
Science tutoring at START Jr. is hands-on wherever possible. We use real-world examples, visual models, and step-by-step problem-solving — not just textbook definitions. For younger students, we make concepts tangible and fun. For high school students, we combine conceptual understanding with the rigorous problem-solving their exams require.
Session length
60 or 90 minutes
Format
1-on-1 (in-person or online)
Frequency
1–2 sessions per week, recommended
Who This Is For
A student who can memorize definitions but can't apply them to problems
A student preparing for a difficult Grade 11 or 12 course or AP exam
A student who fell behind after a unit they didn't understand and hasn't caught up since
A student who is genuinely curious about science and wants to go deeper than the classroom allows
What Parents See
“Chemistry had my son completely defeated. His START Jr. tutor broke it down in a way that actually made sense — he went from a 51% to a 78% in one semester.”
— Parent of a Grade 11 student
“She used to dread science class. Now she talks about it at dinner. I genuinely don't know how they did it.”
— Parent of a Grade 4 student
Science isn't about knowing answers. It's about knowing how to find them. That's exactly what we teach.
Homework Help
We teach them to fish.
Homework time shouldn't be a battle. But for a lot of families, it is — and it's not because their child isn't smart. It's because there's no one there to explain what the teacher meant, catch the mistake before it becomes a bad habit, or simply sit beside them and say "you've got this." That's exactly what START Jr.'s Homework Help program does.
What's Included
Daily homework support
Across all subjects — math, science, English, social studies, French, and more. Students come in (or log on), work through their assignments, and leave having actually understood what they did.
Concept reinforcement
When a homework question reveals a gap in understanding, our educators don't just give the answer. They stop, explain the underlying concept, and make sure the student can do the next one on their own.
Organizational coaching
We help students develop the habits that make school easier: tracking assignments, prioritizing tasks, managing time, and avoiding last-minute cramming.
Test and quiz prep
If an upcoming test is on the horizon, we shift the session to review and practice, so students walk in prepared instead of panicked.
Parent communication
At the end of each session, we send a brief update on what was covered, how your child performed, and anything you should know. No surprises.
Session Format Options
Drop-in sessions (60 min)
Students with lighter or irregular homework loads
Regular weekly sessions (60–90 min)
Students who benefit from consistent structure
After-school block (Mon–Fri)
Students who need daily homework accountability
Who This Is For
Families where homework creates nightly conflict and stress
Students who rush through homework to get it "done" without understanding it
Students who are disorganized and constantly missing assignments or deadlines
Younger students (K–5) who are just learning how to study and need a trusted guide
Older students (Grades 6–12) who are juggling a heavy course load and need support across multiple subjects
What Makes This Different From Just "Doing Homework Together"
Homework Help at START Jr. is not supervision. It's not just making sure the work gets finished. Our educators actively teach during every session — catching misunderstandings, asking guiding questions, and making sure your child walks out knowing the material, not just knowing what to write.
We teach them to fish, not give them the fish.
What Parents See
“The after-school program gave us our evenings back. Homework is done before dinner and my daughter actually knows what she did — I can quiz her on it.”
— Parent of a Grade 6 student
“My son was drowning in homework and failing three subjects at once. Four weeks of Homework Help and he's passing everything. He also just seems... calmer.”
— Parent of a Grade 8 student
Research shows students retain 50% more when they review material within 24 hours of learning it. Homework Help isn't extra — it's the most important hour of the school day.
Not sure where to start?
Most families come to us knowing their child is struggling — but not always knowing exactly why. That's okay. That's what our free consultation is for. In 15 minutes, we'll learn about your child's grade, their current challenges, and their goals. Then we'll tell you honestly which program makes the most sense, what to expect, and what it costs.
No pressure. No sales pitch. Just a conversation between people who care about kids.
What every parent deserves to know
Certified educators, not just "good at the subject"
Every START Jr. educator is a certified teacher or subject specialist with verified credentials and a background check. Being excellent at math doesn't make you excellent at teaching math. We hire people who are both.
We teach understanding, not shortcuts
It's easy for a tutor to just give students the answers. We never do that. Every session ends with a student who can solve the next problem independently — because that's the only kind of progress that actually counts.
Personalized from day one
No two students get the same program. Every learning plan is built from a diagnostic assessment and updated as your child grows. If something isn't working, we change it — fast.
Progress you can actually see
We track every session, share regular updates, and provide written progress reports. You'll always know exactly where your child stands, what's improved, and what we're working on next.
In-person or online — whatever works for you
We offer both in-person sessions at our learning centre and live online sessions via video. Many families use both, depending on the week. The quality is the same either way.
We're in this for the long term
We don't just help kids survive the semester. We build the skills, habits, and confidence they'll carry through every grade — and well beyond school.
